Can we day hike up Mt. Fuji in April? (not aiming for the top)

by Sebastian

Hello,

I hope I'm not asking a question that was already answered. I will be in Japan at the end of Apr. 2025 with the family, and my oldest son (16) and myself would like to hike on Mt. Fuji.

Being off-season, I'm not aiming for getting to the top. I'm rather looking for a 1 day hike, from a place that's accessible by public transport, and then hiking as far (and as safe) as possible without needing crampons and without taking unnecessary risks. It can be either on our own, or with a guide - as long as we can get the "we walked up the Mt. Fuji" feeling :)

We're both in reasonable condition, we can manage a 1,500m height difference up and down in one day.

What recommendations are there?

Best regards,
Sebastian

Sebastian, if you are planning to climb from the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, the trail to the summit was closed on September 11 last year and will not reopen until July 1 of this year.

Also, you should know that because snow starts falling on Mount Fuji in September and accumulates over the winter, April is the month that usually experiences the highest snow coverage.

However, one option (depending on April snow depth) that may be available to you is the Ochudo Nature Trail which is a 2.5 km level course starting from the 5th Station that partially circumnavigates the Mt. Fuji volcano. But last year it didn’t open until May 11. A trail map is here: https://www.narusawa-kanko.jp/pdf/oniwa_trekking_english.pdf

Another alternative might be to try hiking from the base up to the 5th Station (about a 1500 m elevation gain) where you should be able to catch a bus back down to Kawaguchiko Station. More details here:
Is it possible to climb to the summit of Mt. Fuji from the base of the mountain?

Because the Mt. Fuji climbing regulations and transport access restrictions vary from year to year and haven’t been finalized yet for 2025, the availability of services at the 5th Station during your visit are still unknown, however the weeklong holiday period known as Golden Week begins Tuesday, April 29, so depending on when you arrive, based on past years' experience I'm guessing there should be a number of shops open at the 5th Station at that time.

For more up-to-date details in the next few months leading up to your visit, you may wish to contact the kind English-speaking folks at the Fujikawaguchiko Tourist Info Center: +81-555-72-6700 (9:00-17:00)

Thanks for visiting my site and best wishes to your family during your April visit…
