How do you go to the toilet on the Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail before July 10th?

"Please note, however, that even though the main Yoshida Trail will be open to the summit as of July 1, all huts, restrooms, and other facilities above the 8.5 Station will be unavailable"

So does that mean above the 8.5th station, you need portable toilet bags? Do they sell any on the mountain? Do you go off the trail a little to get some privacy? Do you only need the bags for poo or urine too?

BYO portable toilet bag
by: Gary Wolff

Yes, portable toilet bags would be a good idea just in case, but I seriously doubt you can buy them on Japan's most sacred mountain.

Here's an excerpt from p. 75 of my recently published Climbing Mt. Fuji book:

***************

CLIMBING MT. FUJI? BRING YOUR OWN TOILET, PLEASE. (July 11, 2013) - Officials in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka have recommended that people summiting Mt. Fuji over the summer add an extra piece of equipment to their gear: portable toilets.

A predicted increase in the roughly 300,000 people who climb the mountain each year will place an added burden on its already overstretched toilets. At present, on the Fujinomiya Trail there are 11 toilets between the 5th station and the summit, costing around ¥200, and usually involving a fair wait every time you need to relieve yourself.

As it turns out, environmentally-conscious hikers wanting to take care of their own waste have plenty of options for portable toilets (携帯トイレ, keitai toire, in Japanese), from cheap bag-style offerings like the Toire-kun to more elaborate solutions such as urine bags from Subarus, available in both male and female versions. They also even make toilet ponchos for those who need a little extra privacy.
