How much time does it take from the Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail to the Kengamine Peak?

Hi Gary, I love your site as it is so informative. On August 1st, 3 of us will be attempting to climb Mount Fuji. My husband and I are comparatively fit for our age (~60 years) but we still worry about climbing because I have great difficulty descending.

My daughter wants to go to the Kengamine Peak and I looked at the map of the summit, but it wasn't clear to me the time it would take from the Yoshida Trail to the Kengamine Peak. Also, is the bulldozer trail the one that everyone on the Yoshida-Subashiri Trails use?

Thanks,
Kathy

No, I don’t think so, Kathy. The bulldozer trail is for bulldozers, not people, so there are no huts (for resting & refreshments), toilets, first-aid stations, etc. In the event of an emergency, I think it would be better to be near a hut and other climbers who could assist you.

And overcrowding on the Yoshida trail should not be an issue this year since the total number of climbers will be capped at 4000 per day.

Another consideration is that the bulldozer trail is arguably much steeper than the regular climbing trails, especially on the Yoshida descent trail. Although all the switchbacks on the descent trail can get a bit monotonous after a while, the more gradual descent profile (flatter grade) is much easier on the knees and ankles.

All the best to you 3. I’m hoping for good weather for you in August…

Cheers,
Gary

Is the bulldozer trail easier and faster?
by: Kathy

Thank you so much for the information.

We looked at the map but couldn’t read the times. Would you say that the bulldozer trail is much easier and faster?

Thank you once again.
Kathy

45-60 minutes
by: Gary Wolff

Kathy, it takes most most folks around 45 minutes to an hour to hike from the top of the Yoshida Trail clockwise around to the Kengamine summit depending on one's fitness, or an hour and a half to 2 hours to hike all the way around the Ohachimeguri summit crater trail.

In case you missed it, more info on the summit trail is here, including a map showing hiking times that you can click open (click on it again to open an even larger image, even though the quality is not that great): https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji.html#14

No, the bulldozer trail is for bulldozers and separate from the Yoshida ascending and descending hiking trails, although the last I heard, hikers are allowed to use the bulldozer trail from the summit down to the Shita-edoya hut at the 8th station, but are warned to be careful about the bulldozers that normally use it from 10 am to 12 noon, Monday through Friday.

Thanks for your kind words, happy trails, and thanks for visiting my site…

Cheers,
Gary
