Salt is important for Russians

by Yi Yu
(Chofu, Tokyo)

Russians worship salt very much and they regard it as a treasure. Usually, important guests will be served bread and salt. It represents a sincere respect and highest courtesy for the guests from the host.

On the other hand, they think that salt has the power to dispel disasters. If someone accidentally spills a salt tank on the ground, they think that it’s an omen of bad things that will happen among their family. In order to get rid of the bad omen, they always pick up the salt which is spilled and sprinkle the salt on their head.
