The shuttle bus from Kawaguchiko station is not very frequent and I am concerned about being able to get on it

Hi Gary.

Great site, really useful stuff. In August we're planning to stay at the base overnight and climb during the day. This will mean getting a shuttle bus first thing from Kawaguchiko station.

However, they are not very frequent and as you cannot make reservations I was a little concerned about being able to get on one. We are hiking on a Monday and I guess not many people start the climb first thing in the morning but given the time of year I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Many thanks
Vicki

If you can't get on the bus, you might be able to catch a taxi
by: Gary Wolff

Vicki,

Yes, it might be a good idea to get out to the bus stop as early as possible. As for whether there will be more than 1 bus, you might try skyping the Fujikawaguchiko tourist info center (or other TICs on this
page) to get an answer to that: http://transportation.fujikyu.co.jp/english/touristinformation/index.html

If you can't get on the bus, you might be able to catch a taxi (12,000 yen 1-way to the 5th Station), which if you share w/ 3-4 other folks, won't be so expensive. The Fuji Subaru toll road is closed to private vehicles from Aug. 2, but I don't believe this applies to taxis.

Best wishes...

Gary

p.s. You might also think about trying to get on @ Mt. Fuji Station rather than Kawaguchiko Station, as that appears to be where the buses start....

Is there an alternative if we can't get on the bus?
by: Vicki

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your email.

I'm afraid it will be Monday the 5th August. We would really like to stay in Kawaguchiko the night before and after the climb and will then be moving east after having spent a few days in Tokyo already.

Do you think we will have problems getting on the shuttle bus early in the morning, around 7 o'clock? Is there just one bus and when it's full, it's full? Is there an alternative if we can't get on it?

Many thanks for your help.

Best wishes
Vicki

You might consider the bus from Shinjuku directly to the 5th Station
by: Gary Wolff

Thx, Vicki.

Monday is a good choice of days and if at all possible, you should try to avoid the absolute peak season of August 4th-15th.

You might also consider the bus from Shinjuku in Tokyo that'll take you directly to the 5th Station, or take advantage of the Mt. Fuji Round Trip Ticket, a 2-day round trip train/bus pass for only 5500 yen: http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/fuji/index.html

Best wishes....

Cheers,
Gary
