Greenwich clock with standard measurements
Ever since I was born, I have often heard that people talk about Standard Time. My teacher told me about Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Originally referred to as the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, it later became adopted as a global Standard Time.
The Royal Observatory is the source of the Prime Meridian of the world, Longitude 0° 0' 0''. Every place on the Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from this line. The line divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the Earth – just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.
Time is important because it tells us when we need to be at certain places. It tells us how much time has gone by. Time is a very important aspect of our lives.
